1900-112-6888 = 1900-TTDURAI?
as I watch the repeat telecast of last sunday's nkf cancer fund charity show put together painstakingly by TCS artists, i couldn't resist but come online to put forth some of my feelings about the Durai scandal.
to set the stage right, my comments are not in any way biased by the overwhelming response of the people around me.
i'll spare the details of the case, since everyone should know what's going on now. if you don't, then u most probably also don't give a damn where your donation goes, or do u donate at all?
for the benefit of the doubt, update yourself here.
i have no problem with Durai's massive pay, or the fact that NKF overstated certain figures in order to draw more donations. although these issues question the business ethics of NKF, they are after all decisions and responsibilities of the whole NKF management, not Durai's alone.
However, what bothers me, is the way Durai exploits NKF's employee benefits for his own luxuries. note LUXURIES.
NKF is a social welfare organisation. Leaders/management of this organisation should walk the talk. if you're "appealing to people who earn 1k per month to generously donate 50 dollars monthly"*, y would you be installing a tap which costs as much as 1 month of his pay?! in addition, y fly first class when business class is sufficient to represent your social status?
it scares me when i think that so many patients are counting on nkf's funds to live out the rest of their lives, and yet, NKF's head is one who lives lavishly and runs NKF like a business, but not a welfare organisation. what kind of message is being sent out to the public, and most importantly NKF's internal staff? if i'm a NKF employee, i certainly won't know how to face the public again.
the only right thing that he did in this case, is the withdrawal of the defamation suit against SPH. the question lies within his real reason for admiting his lavish spendings. did he really regret what he has done, or was he acting under the orders of the NKF management? well, that's for him to know, and for us to find out.
conclusion? one thing's for sure, I'm going to cancel my monthly pledge to NKF tomorrow. Until the day NKF gives a satisfactory response to this incident, I shall not repledge my donations. I'm doing this, not because I don't wanna do my part for the patients, but because I wonder if my pledge really reaches the patients. I certainly hope someone will file a suit against Durai and get him to compensate not the company, but the patients.
