A+ platelets needed
A 21 year old female patient is down with lymphona and will be taking a stem cell transplant operation very soon. Her best friend is sourcing for A+ platelets donors urgently.
Below is an FAQ regarding platelets donation and criteria to be met.
What is Platelet?
Platelet is the smallest of the cells in the blood. It is essential for the clotting of blood.
Who needs Platelet Transfusion?
Patients with blood disorders, leukaemia or cancer may need frequent platelet transfusions as their platelets are destroyed after chemotherapy, radiation treatment or stem cell transplant.
What is Platelets Donation?
Platelets donation or platelet-pheresis is a special kind of blood donation that allows platelets to be extracted from whole blood through a blood separator machine.
How is Platelets Donation performed?
A needle is inserted into your vein at the forearm after applying local anaesthetic. Sterile procedure tubings are connected to the needle and blood is drawn from your vein into the blood separator machine, which will separate the platelets from whole blood. The rest of your blood will be returned to you to avoid further blood loss. The procedure is painless (almost!) and will take approximately 1-2 hours to complete.
Is Platelets Donation safe?
Platelets donation is very safe because only platelets are removed from the blood. All equipment that comes into direct contact w3ith the blood is disposable, used only once and thrown away. Occasionally, the donor may experience a slight tingling sensation around the lips and nose, or feel slightly cold during the donation process, but these symptoms pass quickly.
How often can I donate platelets?
You can donate platelets every 2 weeks but the total number of donations should not exceed 24 times a year.
To be eligible for donating platelets, you have to meet the following criteria
- Between 18-55 years old
- Weigh at least 50kg
- Did not donate red blood during the last 3 months
- Do not have a history of diabetes, hypertension and asthma
- Did not have flu, fever, cough or sore throat in the past one week
- Did not take antibiotics and flu medication in the past one week
- Did not travel to India, Nepal and other rural countries within the last 6 months
- Did not take anti-malaria pills within the last 6 months
- Have not been exposed to chicken pox in the last 6 moths
- Have good prominent veins on both forearms
- Willing to spend approximately 2 hours during the actual donation process for platelets donations
- Is of A+ blood group (because the patient is A+ !)
If all the above criteria are met, the doctor will examine you and your consent will be taken for the donation. Your blood sample will be taken and tested. Please contact Wei Lin (patient's best friend) via msn at loweilin@hotmail.com.
